Our body is a tool to connect and contain the visible and the invisible, the material and the immaterial, the inside and the outside, the personal and the universal. It adheres perfectly to our uniqueness and contains ancestral history as well. Our creativity originates from this duality. Thus in Butoh dance it is said that we do not ‘move’ but ‘are moved’, and yet what moves us belongs to us for a moment.

In this workshop we will create and traverse imaginary landscapes through which we can explore a different root of movement. By allowing the imagination to become an abstract and exact container, our dance will be able to emerge. Like riverbanks, the images will allow movement to flow more freely. The workshop is divided into a ‘technique’ part in which we will prepare the body, through elements derived from both contemporary dance and somatic work, and a part in which the imagination will consciously integrate with knowledge in order to free it from its limits, through improvisation practice.

‘Dance is, from its sacred origins, a means of knowledge and union with the cosmos. It is a form of ecstasy, to step outside one’s personal boundaries and transcend space and time, to surrender oneself to the invisible pulsation of the universe.’
